The mine

There is a former mine on Silberberg , which was first mentioned in 1463. The Silberberg owes its wealth of gravel ores to the meeting of two types of gneiss from the monotonous Moldanubian zone, namely the cordierite - sillimanite - almandine gneiss with biotite - plagioclase gneiss and a border of porphyry granite .

Until 1542 the main focus was on the mining of silver , then the extraction of vitriol came more and more to the fore. The state and private owners alternated as owners until the mine was finally nationalized in 1772. At the same time, production was changed to Potée ( polished red ). The extraction of precious metals finally ended in 1845.

In 1927 the company was converted into a public limited company. On May 27, 1962, the miners drove in for the last shift. The track system in the Silberberg has a length of about 20 kilometers.

Tourist development

The Silberberg then turned into a leisure and tourist attraction. The Barbarastollen was opened to visitors in 1969, and since then there have been mine tours for everyone in the Barbarastollen. In 1972 the road was opened with a parking lot.

A chairlift , built in 1975, leads from Bodenmais via the Silberberg restaurant (middle station, entrance to the Barbarastollen) to just below the highest point. A 600-meter-long summer toboggan run , which opened in 1980, begins at the middle station of the Silberbergbahn ; other facilities include petting zoos and playgrounds. In winter, the Silberberg ski area offers a winter toboggan run and a children's ski park as special features. Numerous cycle paths were created and an archery course was created in 2012/13 .

A tunnel therapy has also been offered since 1998; chronic respiratory diseases, chronic nasal sinus infections, chronic bronchitis and asthma as well as whooping cough are treated in the Bodenmaiser Heilstollen . The balneological effect of the tunnel air is used therapeutically in an emergency exit side tunnel of the Barbara main tunnel.

The Silberberg is visited by many tourists, especially the show mine below the summit.

On the top of the rock there is a summit cross with a deep view of Bodenmais. You can get there on various hiking trails, for example from Böhmhof (train station on the Zwiesel – Bodenmais railway line ), Brandten or from the Schönebene car park.

The bats on the Silberberg

Around 14 different species of bats in thousands of specimens have their winter quarters in and around the Silberberg. During the summer they can be found in barns, trees and nesting boxes during the day. The animals can be observed at certain times from a bridge.

Mineral finds

From the 19th century, the Silberberg became known as a rich deposit of minerals, the crystal stages of which found their way into state and university collections. A total of 82 types of mineral have been identified, including pyrrhotite , crayonite , vivianite and andesine .

Geotopes

Because of its historical traces of mining, the Silberberg show mine has been designated as a particularly valuable geotope (geotope number: 276G002) by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment . The summit area is designated as a valuable geotope (geotope number: 276R016).

In 2002 the Silberberg was awarded the official seal of approval for Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes . In 2006 it was included in the list of 77 awarded national geotopes in Germany. See also the list of geotopes in the Regen district .
