Das Bächlein is a German poem by an unknown author that was incorrectly attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . It appeared in several school song books of the 19th and 20th centuries, was translated into various languages and set to music several times.

history

The brook may have come from Caroline Rudolphi . It begins with the words Du Bächlein, silver-light and clear and contains three stanzas. The brook is addressed in the first verse. In the second and third stanzas it answers the question: where are you from, where are you going?

The poem is still considered to be a work by Goethe and it soon enjoyed great popularity. It was translated into Italian, English and Dutch and was set to different settings as early as the 19th century, including Am Bächlein by Georg Goltermann and Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda . After Richard Strauss took over the presidency of the Reichsmusikkammer in November 1933 , he thanked Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels that same year with the song Das Bächlein for voice and piano in F major and wrote an orchestral version for it in 1935. This is the first of his Drei Lieder, Op. 88 , where Goethe was also given as the text author. In some recent editions, the last line , Who I think will be my guide, is replaced by Who I think will be my guide .
