The girl Insiang (original title Insiang ) is a Filipino melodrama from 1976 directed by Lino Brocka . The actresses Hilda Koronel and Mona Lisa, who are famous in the Philippines, stand in front of the camera for the first time as daughter and mother. In 1978 Insiang was shown as the first Filipino film as part of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes International Film Festival .

action

A tracking shot shows the young woman Insiang on her way home from work as a laundress through an impoverished and run-down area of Manila. She lives in a cramped hut with her mother, who has been bitter since the father's runaway, and the family of her paternal uncle. Insiang's hope is to marry her friend Bebot in order to escape the oppressive life situation. However, he is undecided and hides behind excuses. She doesn't realize that the shy nanding from the neighborhood is also interested in her.

When a son of Insiang's aunt, while drunk, approaches Ludy, the saleswoman in a small shop in the neighborhood, immorally, Tonja takes this as a welcome opportunity to get rid of the unloved relatives and to billet her much younger lover Dado. He had already had an eye on Insiang and uses the new constellation to act as Insiang's protector and forbid Bebot to contact her. Insiang, however, vehemently rejects him. One night, Dado finally raped her. Tonja believes her daughter at first, but Dado knows how to convince her of Insiang's complicity through her allegedly lascivious behavior.

Insiang seeks the help of Bebot, who only takes advantage of her desperate situation to sleep with her in an hour hotel. When he disappeared from the hotel room the next morning and no longer shows any interest in her, she seeks revenge. She pretends to accept Dado's advances and makes sure that he and two other men beat up Bebot.

Dado's relationship with Insiang does not remain hidden from Tonja for long. In order to get revenge on Dado, whom she still loaths, Insiang incites her mother Tonja's jealousy. In a fit of anger, Tonja stabs Dado from behind in front of her daughter. The film ends with Insiang visiting her mother in prison.

background

Brocka himself describes the film as a character study of a young woman who grows up in a miserable environment. It reflects the violence of living conditions, which destroys people and robs them of their dignity.

According to producer Ruby Tan, the film was the first to be shot in Tondo , a poor part of Manila . The script is based on a family known to the author Mario O'Hara. The final scene was shot in the same prison where the real mother was imprisoned.

A restored version by The Film Foundation and the Film Development Council of the Philippines was shown at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival .
