Das Rössli, the soul of a village is a documentary film from 2019 by Swiss director Erich Langjahr and co-directed with Silvia Haselbeck. The film tells the historical and structural events of the “Rössli” inn in Root, built in 1751 .

Emergence

The film “The Rössli, the soul of a village” is the result of long-term observation. From 2014 the “Rössli” was renovated. Until the reopening in 2019, Erich Langjahr and Silvia Haselbeck, who have been living in the same village for many years, accompanied the renovation of the building.

content

The "Rössli" building, built in 1751 in the center of the Lucerne community of Root, had been vacant since 1993 and was rotting away. If it hadn't been listed as a historical monument in 1998 , it would have been demolished. After twenty years, the tide turned in 2013. In the Abendrot Foundation , which was building a residential complex on the opposite side of the street, an investor was found who was willing to finance a comprehensive renovation and restoration of the old inn.

Langjahr and Haselbeck's film focuses on the history of a centuries-old restaurant and the depiction of today's rural civilization in its rapid change. At the same time, the modern working world on the building site in the 21st century is documented. “I've always wanted to make a film about a construction site,” says Langjahr. Almost all of the people involved in the construction were accompanied by cameras, which gave them a face. What is striking are the different origins from all over Europe, in keeping with the topic of change. “Das Rössli, the soul of a village” is the film adaptation of a five-year happy ending.

reception

Andreas Fässler wrote about the film in the Zuger Zeitung in 2019 : “Compared to other works by Langjahr, the new documentary has a particularly personal touch, as the filmmaker and his partner have lived in Root for around 40 years and the enormous change in the village including the recent history of the ‹Rössli› virtually from the windowsill.
