Daulatdia ( Bengali দৌলতদিয়া Daulatadiẏā ) is a village in the district Rajbari in Bangladesh . Daulatdia has one of the largest brothels in the world.

location

Daulatdia is located in the center of Bangladesh about 70 kilometers from the capital Dhaka , on the Padma , one of the largest rivers in Bangladesh, and has a train and trunk road connection, making it a traffic junction for truck drivers. Daulatdia is regularly hit by floods.

prostitution

Daulatdia has the largest brothel in Bangladesh , which is also one of the largest brothels in the world. It is one of 20 officially approved brothels in the country that opened around 1988. However, it existed unofficially decades earlier. Bangladesh is one of the few Islamic countries where prostitution is legal. The number of prostitutes in the village is estimated between 1,300 and 2,000. Every day over 3000 sex tourists come from other parts of Bangladesh to have cheap sex and get drugs.

Although prostitution is only legal for women aged 18 and over in Bangladesh , the average age of newly arriving sex workers is 14 years. Some prostitutes in Daulatdia are only 10 years old. Many of them have pimps, who are mostly older women ("madams"). The sex workers are often tricked by their pimps into taking drugs such as Ventolin or Oradexon , some of which were developed for fattening cattle in order to become dependent on the pimps. Also, heroin and amphetamine are widespread. Infectious diseases such as HIV / AIDS , hepatitis or sexually transmitted diseases, as well as other communicable diseases such as cholera , tuberculosis and COVID-19 are more common.

On March 20, 2020, the brothel was ordered to close in response to the COVID-19 pandemic . On March 23, 2020, sex workers from Daulatdia appealed to the government of Bangladesh to grant them financial bridging during the closure.
