La Daurade is a small historic district in the city center of the southern French city of Toulouse . It is located on the eastern bank of the Garonne , south of the Quartier du Capitole (to which it is often counted) and west of Esquirol . Daurade belongs to today's Quartier n ° 1 (Toulouse center) and the canton of Toulouse-1 . From the Middle Ages to the Revolution , Daurade was a capitoulat , one of the districts that elected a councilor ( capitoul ).

The name "Daurade" refers to the Notre-Dame de la Daurade basilica . This originated from a temple of Apollo in Roman times . "Daurade" is a smooth form of "Deaurata" ( covered in gold ) and referred to the magnificent mosaics of the church. The church and the attached Benedictine monastery developed into an important place of devotion to Mary .

The Port de la Daurade , next to the church, has long been the city's main port and a hub for river trade along the Garonne. The Garonne bridge Pont de la Daurade was next to it from the 12th century to 1639 . Furthermore, Daurade was one of three locations of water mills in the Middle Ages , which dammed part of the Garonne by means of mill weirs. The Moulins de la Daurade were abandoned around 1400 after a long conflict with the two other Toulouse mill weirs Bazacle and Château-Narbonnais .

In the 18th century the church fell into serious disrepair and was finally demolished to make way for a planned new building and the construction of the high quay promenade. The rebuilding of the church was delayed by the turmoil of the revolution and was not finally completed until the end of the 19th century.

The port was also in decline after shipping had shifted to the Canal du Midi and the Canal de Garonne and was eventually replaced entirely by rail and road connections. Today only small excursion boats moor at the site. The former port area, located at river level, is now a park-like green area, which is connected to the higher-lying residential buildings via a ramp. The green space, together with the street that surrounds it, forms the Place de la Daurade .

Downstream, Daurade is connected to Place and Pont Saint-Pierre via the Quai Lucien Lombard , and upstream via the Quai de la Daurade to the Pont Neuf .
