David John "Dave" Black (born January 23, 1928 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † December 4, 2006 in Alameda , California ) was an American drummer of swing and Dixieland jazz .

Life

Dave Black accompanied Charlie Parker on a guest appearance in Philadelphia around 1948, when he was performing at the Blue Note jazz club . Black later briefly became a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra when Louie Bellson left the band; Black and Butch Ballard were the interim drummers until Sam Woodyard took over in 1956 in her legendary performance at the Newport Jazz Festival . Black worked on Duke Ellington's trio album Piano Reflections , and he was also in the band when the Ellington albums were recorded in Hamilton in 1954 and Ellington '55 . In the late 1950s, Black played in Bob Scobey's Dixieland jazz band in San Francisco.
