David Samuel Alcolumbre Tobelem (born June 19, 1977 in Macapá , Amapá ) is a Brazilian politician . He is the 67th President of the Federal Senate in the National Congress .

Life

Davi Alcolumbre is of Moroccan descent, his parents are Samuel José Tobelem and Júlia Peres Alcolumbre. He is the first Jew in the history of Brazil to assume the presidency of the Senate. He has completed secondary school and is a businessman by profession.

His political career began when he joined the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT, 1999-2006), he then moved to the PFL, the forerunner of the Democratas , to which he still belongs today. From 2001 to 2003 he was a city councilor in Macapá, in 2002 he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress in his home state , and in 2006 and 2010 he was re-elected.

In the 2014 elections in Brazil , he ran as a Senate candidate against Gilvam Borges and won with 36.26% of the vote. He took office on February 1, 2015.

On February 2nd, Alcolumbre was elected in the first round with 42 votes as the new President of the Bundessenat, thanks to the support of the opponents of Renan Calheiros and part of the government base of Jair Bolsonaro .

He was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 18, 2020 .
