Davi Kopenawa Yanomami
Davi Yanomami Kopenawa (* around 1955 in the Brazilian state of Roraima ) is shaman and leader of the Yanomami - Indians in Brazil. He campaigns for the rights of the Brazilian indigenous peoples, especially for securing their land rights. He has received international awards for his commitment.
Since 1985, Davi has campaigned for the vast areas of the Yanomami in the states of Roraima and Amazonas to be recognized as their property. Gold diggers had invaded these regions in the mid-1980s. As a result, many Yanomami died from imported infectious diseases against which they had no defenses.
