David A. Garvin

David Alan Garvin (born May 12, 1952 in New York City , † April 30, 2017 in Lexington , Massachusetts ) was an American economist at Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Life

David A. Garvin had been Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School in Boston since 1979 , where he taught leadership, general management and operations management. He has worked as a consultant for Amyris, Biogen Idec, Booz Allen Hamilton, Frito-Lay, Gillette, LL Bean, 3M, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mitsubishi, Morgan Stanley, Mueller, Novartis, PPG, relx, Seagate, Stryker and the US Forest Service.

Prior to joining Harvard Business School, he worked for the Federal Trade Commission and Sloan Commission on Government and Higher Education. His academic focus was general management and strategic change with a focus on business and management processes, organizational learning and the design and management of large, complex organizations.

After graduating from Harvard College with a bachelor's degree in 1974, he received his doctorate (Ph. D.) at MIT in 1979 .

From 1979 to 1984 Garvin was assistant professor for business administration at the Harvard Business School and worked there from 1984 to 1998 as a private lecturer for business administration. He then taught business administration from 1989 to 1990 and continued to work as a lecturer.

David A. Garvin has authored and co-authored ten books, more than thirty-five articles, including his most successful article, " The Art of Giving and Receiving Advice, " eight CD-ROMs and videotapes, and more than seventy case studies from Harvard Business School.
