David Adam (clergyman)

David Adam (born October 18, 1936 in Alnwick , Northumberland , † January 24, 2020 there ) was a British Anglican clergyman and author.

Life

David Adam dropped out of school when he was 15 and worked in the local coal mine . After three years he decided to train for ministry in the Church of England and went to the church college of the Society of the Sacred Mission (SSM) in Kelham near Newark-on-Trent . After ordination, he was pastor of the Danby-Castleton-Commondale Affiliated Congregation in the North York Moors National Park in North Yorkshire for over 20 years . Here he began to deal intensively with Celtic spirituality and to write prayers in this tradition. After that he was pastor on Holy Island ( Lindisfarne ) for 13 years , where he looked after thousands of pilgrims and other visitors. In 1989 he was appointed Canon of York Minster . In retirement he lived on the coast near Lindisfarne.

His first book of prayers, The Edge of Glory: Prayers in the Celtic Tradition , was published in 1985; it became an instant bestseller . Adam wrote numerous books of prayers, reflections and mediations that were very popular in Britain.
