Giuseppe Maria Velzi OP (originally Carlo Velzi ; born March 8, 1767 in Como , † November 23, 1836 in Montefiascone ) was an Italian Dominican, bishop and cardinal .

Life

He came from a wealthy family. He received the sacrament of Confirmation on May 25, 1776. When he entered the order of preachers in the Roman convent of Santa Maria sopra Minerva , in December 1782 he accepted the religious name Giuseppe Maria . After studying in the Dominican houses of Perugia , Viterbo , Lucca and Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome , he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in theology on February 1, 1810 .

Presumably in 1789 Giuseppe Maria Velzi was ordained a priest . In 1805 he met Minerva as prior of the convent of La Quercia in Viterbo and of S. Maria sopra. When the French repealed the medals in 1809, he fled to Como in 1810. He accompanied the Bishop of Como , Carlo Rovelli , on his trip to Paris to a Synod of Bishops in 1811. In 1812 he was appointed rector of the Como seminary . After Bishop Rovelli died in 1819, Giuseppe Maria Velzi returned to his order and settled in Perugia. In 1822 he became General Procurator of the Dominican Order. From 1822 to 1826 he was professor of dogmatics at La Sapienza University . In May 1822 he was also consultor of the Index Congregation . Pope Leo XII. In October 1823 he was appointed Vicar General of the Dominicans, a position he held until 1828. In addition, from 1823 to 1824 he was a visitor to the Dominican convent in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , and in 1825 he visited the convent in Piedmont . In September 1826 the Pope appointed him magister sacri palatii , corrector of oriental books and assessor of the Index Congregation.

Pope Gregory XVI elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of July 2, 1832 . The red hat Giuseppe Maria Velzi received on July 5 of that year, and on 17 December 1832, he was a cardinal priest , the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva assigned.

On July 2, 1832, Giuseppe Maria Velzi was appointed Bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto . He received his episcopal consecration on July 15, 1832 in Santa Maria sopra Minerva by the Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri and Cardinal Dean Bartolomeo Pacca ; Co-consecrators were Giuseppe Della Porta Rodiani , Latin Patriarch of Constantinople and Vice President of Rome , and Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei , Latin Patriarch of Antioch .

Giuseppe Maria Velzi died at his bishopric in Montefiascone and was buried in the church of Santa Maria della Quercia in Viterbo.
