David Bahati (born August 6, 1973 ) is a Ugandan politician .

Life

Bahati grew up as an orphan. Bahati studied economics at Makerere University in Uganda and Cardiff University in Wales. In 2004 he went to the USA, where he received an introduction to political campaigning at the Conservative Leadership Institute in Arlington and made important contacts with conservative politicians such as John Ensign and John Ashcroft . He is a member of the National Resistance Movement political party and a member of the parliament of Uganda .

Since October 2009 Bahati has been increasingly reported in the international western press due to the Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Bill , which he helped initiate . According to Bahati, the reason for this is the protection of Ugandan children. Homosexuals wanted to try to recruit children and use promotional materials to turn them into homosexuals. Bahati also stated that the basis of this law is the Bible. The initially unsuccessful bill was brought back to parliament by Bahati in 2012, this time not calling for the death penalty for homosexual acts. The law was passed by parliament on December 20, 2013 and annulled by the Hungarian Constitutional Court on August 1.

Bahati is the chairman of The Uganda Scouts Association . He is also a member and secretary of the Ugandan branch of the worldwide evangelical network The Family . For example, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Minister of Ethics James Nsaba Buturu are also members and have invested millions of dollars in elite education in Uganda over the past decade.

Bahati is married.
