David Bressoud

David Marius Bressoud (born March 27, 1950 in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania ) is an American mathematician who deals with algorithmic number theory and combinatorics.

Bressoud studied at Swarthmore College with a bachelor's degree in 1971 and at Temple University with a master's degree in 1975 and a doctorate with Emil Grosswald in 1977 (Proof and Generalization of Certain Identities Conjectured by Ramanujan). Prior to that he taught math at Clare Hall School in Antigua as part of the Peace Corps. He was a professor at Pennsylvania State University (from 1977 assistant professor and later professor) and has been a professor at Macalester College since 1994 . From 1995 to 2001 he headed the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and is DeWitt Wallace Professor . He lives in Saint Paul .

He was visiting professor and visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study (1979/80), the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Visiting Assistant Professor 1980/81), the University of Minnesota, the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg (as Fulbright Lecturer 1985/86) and at State College Area High School.

He deals specifically with disintegrations and, since his dissertation, with conjectures and identities of Srinivasa Ramanujan in this area ( Rogers-Ramanujan identities and generalizations) with connections to analysis (special functions) and representation theory. He published analysis textbooks that use the historical (genetic) method and in 2008 also obtained a new edition of the classic textbook on this by Otto Toeplitz (Calculus - a genetic approach, Chicago University Press).

He was President of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), Polya Lecturer of MAA, and received an MAA Distinguished Teaching Award. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . From 1982 to 1984 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .
