Three successful years followed with Bilbao's second set, for which he was rewarded with a professional contract.

After 14 games, mostly as a substitute, without scoring he was looking for his chance at Elche CF . There he was able to convince in the second division for the next two years and so he switched to the highly ambitious Gimnàstic de Tarragona . With the Catalans, he was promoted to the Primera División in the second attempt . But after a catastrophic season and the immediate relegation as a knocked-off bottom of the table, he left the club. In the meantime, David Cuéllar had recommended himself sufficiently for his ex-club through his performances in Elche and Tarragona . Since the summer of 2007 he played again for Athletic Bilbao , but the return failed and after only seven appearances he moved to the first division relegated Real Murcia in 2008 . He was only used irregularly in the 2008/09 season and left the club after a year. He joined league rivals UD Salamanca . He missed most of the first half of the 2009/10 season due to injury.

In the summer of 2010, David Cuéllar left Salamanca again. Only in 2013 he resurfaces when he at CF Reus Deportiu in the Segunda División B hired. There he became a regular again. After a year he moved to FC Vilafranca in the Tercera División , where he ended his career in 2015.
