David Christopher DeJesus (born December 20, 1979 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American baseball player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Rays in Major League Baseball since late August 2013 . He previously played for the Washington Nationals .

Career

David DeJesus was selected as a high school player in the 43rd round of the 1997 MLB Draft by the New York Mets . He turned down their contract offer, however, to instead run for three years for the team at Rutgers University . In the MLB Draft 2000 he was finally committed in the fourth round of the Kansas City Royals , for which he made his debut in Major League Baseball on September 2, 2003. In the 2004 Rookie of the Year vote , the Left Fielder was ranked sixth.

On March 9, 2004, DeJesus extended his contract with the Kansas City Royals for another five years through the 2010 season (with an option for an additional year through the club) for a total of $ 13.8 million. On November 10, 2010, the Royals transferred DeJesus to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Vin Mazzaro and Justin Marks .
