David Edelstadt
David Edelstadt (born May 9, 1866 near Kaluga in the Russian Empire ; died October 17, 1892 in Denver , Colorado ) was a Yiddish-speaking writer and anarchist .
biography
Edelstadt was strongly influenced by the life of his father, who, like many Jews, was in forced service for 25 years in the strongly anti-Semitic army of the tsar . Russian was his mother tongue and Yiddish was his language of communication and propaganda . He started using them when he emigrated to the United States in 1882.
Edelstadt belonged to the first Jewish anarchist organization in New York City , the group Pionire der Frayhayt (German: Pioneers of Freedom). It operated mainly in the Jewish part of New York, the Lower East Side. The indictment of the Haymarket anarchists had led to this formation. The group also kept in touch with and contributed articles to the London Yiddish anarchist magazine Arbeter Fraynd (Workers' Friend ). In 1889 Edelstadt edited the anarchist magazine Truth . It was discontinued after 20 issues due to a lack of funds.
He was an employee and editor-in-chief of the Free Workers Voice and wrote many poems in addition to his practical gainful work . Especially his texts on the state persecution of the anarchists found many readers.
The poor working conditions in New York's sweatshops resulted in him contracting tuberculosis . So he had to give up his position in 1891 and moved to Denver , Colorado to heal , where he continued to write poetry. Edelstadt died on October 17, 1892 at the age of 26. His brother and his wife also died of tuberculosis. Over the next few years, cultural groups emerged in Chicago , Boston and other cities who took up his oeuvre and carried on his legacy.
