David Erskine, 2nd Baron Erskine

David Montagu Erskine, 2nd Baron Erskine ( 1777 - March 19, 1855 in Butler's Green , Sussex ), was a British peer and politician .

Life

His father was Thomas Erskine, 1st Baron Erskine , his mother was Frances, daughter of Daniel Moore. When his father died in 1823, he inherited his title and the associated seat in the House of Lords .

David Erskine graduated from Trinity College , Cambridge with a Master of Arts (MA) in 1797 . In 1802 he was admitted to the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association and thus authorized to serve as a barrister . Although he never wanted to follow in his father's political footsteps, he took over the Portsmouth district as a Member of the House of Commons between February and October 1806 after his election as Lord Chancellor for the Whigs . He evaded further influence by his father by having himself appointed as Plenipotentiary Envoy in Washington in July 1806 ; he fulfilled the requirements for this office through his first marriage to Frances Cadwallader in 1799.

In 1810 he returned to England with his family and remained without any demonstrable employment until 1824, when he was appointed representative in Stuttgart . In 1828 he was transferred to Munich as an envoy , where he held out until his retirement in 1834 without a chance for an award. He then returned to England and settled in Sussex, where he stayed until his death.

He was married three times. The first marriage, on December 6, 1799, to Frances, daughter of the American General John Cadwallader, had the following children:

The second marriage, on July 29, 1843, to Anne Bond, daughter of John Travis, remained childless, as was the third marriage, on December 21, 1852, to Anna, daughter of William Cunninghame Cunninghame Graham, 7th Lord of Gartmore has been.
