John Cadwallader Erskine, 4th Baron Erskine (* 1804 , † March 28, 1882 in Torquay , Sevon ) was a British nobleman and politician .

Life

His father was David Montagu Erskine, 2nd Baron Erskine ; his mother was Frances, daughter of the American General John Cadwallader. When his brother Thomas Erskine, 3rd Baron Erskine , who was two years older than him, died childless in 1877, he took over his title and thus the right to a seat in the House of Lords .

After his training he went into the public service and from 1826 worked as a "covenanted servant" for the Bengal Civil Service . He met his first wife in India, where his children were born. It was not until 1853 that he returned to England with his family, having retired after 25 years of service.

He was married twice. The first marriage in India was on April 30, 1829 with Margaret, daughter of John Martyn. From this marriage came the two daughters Fanny Macnaghten and Margaret Catherine; as well as the son William Macnaghten , heir and later 5th Baron Erskine. The second marriage, concluded in England on January 25, 1865, with Maria Louisa Cullen, daughter of Colonel Alexander Campbell (KH, CB ), remained childless.
