David Gilman (born December 6, 1954 in Roswell , New Mexico ) is a retired American canoeist and luge rider .

Gilman competed in two different sports at the Olympics . In canoe racing , Gilman was national champion in K1 in 1976 and in K2 in 1979 . As early as 1976 he was able to qualify for the Summer Olympics in Montreal . In the K1 over 1000 meters he reached the semifinals and was fifth in his run. The sport of tobogganing was brought closer to Gilman by Bonny Warner , so that in 1984 both took part in the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . Gilman took 17th place there. In the same year he also competed in the canoe at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles . In K4 he reached the repechage race with his teammates Norman Bellingham , Dan Schnurrenberger and Chris Spelius . They finished theirs in fourth place.

Gilman graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977 with a degree in kinesiology . He joined the army and served as a captain .

His sister Marietta Gilman was also active in canoeing.
