David Hugh Alexander Hannay, Baron Hannay of Chiswick (born September 28, 1935 in London ) is a British diplomat .

Life

Hannay was born in London and attended Winchester College and New College . In 1959 he started at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and represented the United Kingdom in Tehran and Kabul . From 1965 to the 1970s, he represented the British government in talks that eventually led to the United Kingdom's entry into the European Economic Community (EEC). In the 1970s and 1980s he held various offices in the Foreign Office in London. From 1984 to 1985 he worked for the British Embassy in Washington, DC . He was then appointed ambassador and represented the United Kingdom in the EEC from 1985 to 1990. Afterwards he was a representative in the United Nations from 1990 to 1995 .

From 1996 to 2003 he was ambassador to Cyprus . He was also one of the authors of the UN High Level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change reform paper, which was presented to Kofi Annan , Secretary General of the United Nations, in December 2004 .

From January 2006 to 2011 Hannay was chairman of the United Nations Association UK and is currently chairman of the UN parliamentary group . He is also active in the nuclear disarmament group.

Awards

In 1981 he was inducted into the Order of St Michael and St George as a Companion , knighted as Knight Commander of the same order in 1986 and raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the same order in 1995 .

In 2001 he was made a Life Peer and received the title Baron Hannay of Chiswick , of Bedford Park in the London Borough of Ealing. He has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .

In 2003 he was accepted into the Order of the Companions of Honor . He is also Vice Chancellor of the University of Birmingham .
