David Held (born August 27, 1951 - March 2, 2019 ) was a British political scientist and sociologist . He was Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Durham and Masters from University College.

Life

The focus of Held's work was political theory . Together with Daniele Archibugi he played a key role in the exploration of cosmopolitanism . He was also an expert on globalization .

Together with Anthony Giddens , he founded the Polity Press publishing house in 1984, which is now one of the world's leading publishing houses in the social sciences and humanities. He is also the editor of Global Policy, a Durham-based academic journal founded in 2008 that seeks to create links between researchers and practitioners on issues of global significance.

Until October 2011, Held was Professor of Political Science and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics (LSE). Since January 2012, he has served as Chairman of the University of Durham's oldest college, Head of Political Science.

controversy

In 2011, the LSE was harshly criticized in public for a cooperation with a foundation close to the regime of the former Libyan ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi and the controversial doctoral degree of his son Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi acquired in 2009 under Held's supervision . An investigation by the former highest judge of England and Wales, Lord Harry Woolf , showed, among other things, that Held, contrary to strong warnings from recognized Libya experts, pushed through the acceptance of a donation of 1.5 million pounds to a foundation funded by Libya's international business partners would have.
