David Child Teacher
David Samuel Kinderlehrer (born October 23, 1941 in Allentown (Pennsylvania) ) is an American mathematician who deals with analysis.
Child teacher studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1963 and received his doctorate in 1968 from the University of California, Berkeley with Hans Lewy ( Minimal surfaces whose boundaries contain spikes ). From 1968 he was an instructor and from 1975 professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis . In 1971/72 he was at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa . From 2003 he was Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University .
He deals with partial differential equations , minimal areas and variation inequalities, with mathematical applications in the microstructure of biological materials, solid state physics and in materials science, such as liquid crystals, protein motors, and growth of crystalline grains.
He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He was invited speaker at the 1974 International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver ( Elliptic Variational Inequalities ).
In 2002 he published the Selecta of his teacher Hans Lewy at Birkhäuser.
