Dietrich Lortz

Dietrich Lortz (born August 8, 1935 in Massen ; † April 19, 2013 in Munich ) was a German physicist .

Lortz received his doctorate in Munich in 1962 (title of the dissertation: instabilities of stationary convection currents of finite amplitude ) and completed his habilitation in Munich in 1969 with the habilitation thesis: On the existence of toroidal magnetohydrostatic equilibria without rotational transformation . From then on he taught as an adjunct university professor in Munich and did research at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics .

He dealt theoretically with magnetohydrodynamics and hydrodynamics, for example with applications to the plasmas in tokamaks and in stellarators (partly with Jürgen Nührenberg in the 1970s and 1980s) and the earth's magnetic field. A hydrodynamic instability of the convection flow of rotating liquids is named after him and Günter Küppers ( Küppers-Lortz instability ). In 1968 he gave a particularly elegant ( Friedrich Hermann Busse ) analytical solution to the kinematic dynamo problem.
