David Knopfler (born December 27, 1952 in Glasgow ) is a British musician and, together with his brother Mark Knopfler, one of the founding members of the rock band Dire Straits .

Musical career

On the first two albums of Dire Straits ( Dire Straits and Communiqué ) Knopfler played the rhythm guitar . In 1980 he left the band because he felt creatively and emotionally restricted and inhibited in his musical development, and began a solo career.

In 1983 he released his first solo album Release. In the song Madonna's Daughter, his brother Mark and in Soul Kissing John Illsley from the Dire Straits with. His second album Behind the Lines , released in 1984, is strongly influenced by synthesizer sounds . A year later (1985) he released his third album Cut the Wire and wrote the title track Double Dealing for the Tatort episode Doppelspiel . In 1988, Lips against the Steel followed , which, like his previous albums, was released by A&M Records in the USA.

His fifth album Lifelines was released in 1991 and was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. With the support of his long-time friend Harry Bogdanov , pieces such as Rise Again, Like Lovers Do, Falling and Guiding Star were created. In 1993 the album The Giver was released, which is characterized by simple arrangements. The albums Small Mercies and Wishbones followed in 1995 and 2001 . Chris Rea plays in some tracks by Wishbones and the 2004 CD Ship of Dream . Julia Neigel sings a duet on Tears Fall with him on the German release of the latter CD . Knopfler has worked with Amilia Spicer and Megan Slankard , among others .

In 2006 he released his tenth album Songs for the Siren and in 2008 the best-of album Compilation. In 2009, the latter compilation appeared with a bonus title as The Anthology 1983-2008. In September 2011 he recorded 18 acoustic songs with Bogdanov "live in the studio", including seven new compositions, which were released in October 2011 as a double CD. Another live CD Made in Germany , recorded in Erfurt, was released in 2013. Since May 2015 he has been on tour with Bogdanovs in four countries for "The Grace Tour 2015/2016".

During the 1990s, in addition to his musical activities, David Knopfler also worked as a professional website developer . He created websites for various companies and institutions and dealt intensively with web design techniques . He also added its range to include the areas of e-commerce , e-publishing , HTML and Internet - Consulting .
