John Illsley (born June 24, 1949 in Leicester , England ) is a British musician .

Career

In 1977, the bassist Illsley founded the British band Dire Straits together with Mark Knopfler ( guitar ), his brother David Knopfler (guitar) and Pick Withers on drums , in which he played continuously and alongside Mark Knopfler as the only founding member until it was dissolved in the 1990s .

In the 1980s he released two solo albums, Never Told a Soul (1984) and Glass (1988), with Mark Knopfler helping him out on guitar. In June 2002, Mark Knopfler held four benefit concerts in London, at which Illsley and other ex-Dire Straits members ( Guy Fletcher on keyboards , Chris White on saxophone and Danny Cummings on drums) were on stage together for the first time since 1992 stood.

After years of chronic leukemia, Illsley had to undergo a stem cell transplant in 2011 and is now considered cured. In 2015 he went on a European tour with his live band, which also included guitarist Phil Palmer .
