David Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Crawford
David Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Crawford († January 24, 1446 at the Battle of Arbroath ) was the ruler of Scotland for the underage King James II. He belonged to the Lindsay clan from the Scottish Lowlands .
He was the son of Alexander Lindsay, 2nd Earl of Crawford and his wife Marjorie. He inherited his father in 1438 as Earl of Crawford .
Battle of Arbroath
In the Battle of Arbroath in early 1446, the Lindsay clan moved under David Lindsay's leadership with more than 1000 men. On the opposite side stood the Ogilvie clan , supported by the Oliphant clan , the Gordon clan , the Seton clan and the Forbes of Pitsligo clan .
David Lindsay rode between the two lines to negotiate a truce. A poorly instructed member of the Ogilvies, who thought this was the start of the Lindsay attack, hurled his spear at the earl, hit him in the mouth and killed him instantly. Then the battle began, which ended in favor of the Lindsays.
