Saltcoats Castle

Saltcoats Castle is the ruin of a low castle about 800 meters south of the village of Gullane in the Scottish administrative unit East Lothian . It was a Hofburg from the end of the 16th century. The ruin is now a Scheduled Monument .

history

Saltcoats Castle belonged to the Livingstones . In the 18th century it fell to the Hamiltons of Pencaitland . The castle was inhabited until after 1800, but was partially demolished in 1820.

architecture

Aerial view of the castle grounds

The castle was built in an unusual way. Three sides of the courtyard were built on with lines of buildings that had two full floors and an attic. The west side consisted of two towers, the ground floors of which had a round floor plan, but which expanded into a square floor plan with the first floor. An arch that once supported a parapet connects the two towers. There are loopholes in the walls and a vaulted cellar .

The coat of arms of the builder, Patrick Levingstoun from Saltcoats, can be found today over the door of a nearby farm. The year of construction seems to be 1592.

In the border wall of the castle ruins there is a desk-like, 5.1 mx 3.6 m pigeon house , which today no longer has a roof. The part with buttresses walls provided consist of quarry stone with stone coverings and a block row return. The castle has a stepped gable . There are six entry holes in a network in the southern gable wall: around 200 nests have been preserved.
