David Paul Murphy (born March 1, 1984 in Hartlepool , County Durham ) is a retired English football player .

Career

Murphy signed his first professional contract with FC Middlesbrough in 2001 , but could not prevail there. At the end of the 2003/04 season he was loaned to Barnsley FC for two months . His expiring contract was not extended by Middlesbrough and so Murphy moved to Scotland in the summer of 2004 to the local first division club Hibernian Edinburgh .

In three and a half seasons he completed 107 league games for the Hibs and won the Scottish League Cup with the club in 2007 . In the 2005/06 UEFA Cup he was in both games against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk when they lost 5-1 on aggregate.

In January 2008, the left-back received an offer from Birmingham City and was eventually signed for a £ 1.5m transfer fee.
