David Raynal (born July 26, 1840 in Paris , † January 28, 1903 in Paris) was a French businessman and politician. From September 1880 to January 1882 and from February 1883 to April 1885 he was Minister of Public Works, from September 1893 to May 1894 Minister of the Interior of his country.

Life and work

David Raynal came from a Jewish family and was active in various companies at a young age. After a few years in the service of the Southern Railway , where he also met Charles de Freycinet , Raynal co-founded the shipping company Astruc & Raynal in Bordeaux in 1862 . During the Franco-Prussian War he worked in the General Staff.

Political career

From 1874 Raynal participated as a general councilor in the regional self-government in the Gironde department , the following year he ran unsuccessfully for the Chamber of Deputies when a by-election became necessary . In the next regular election in April 1879, the leap into parliament, where Raynal supported the Republican Left ( Léon Gambetta ). After his death he moved further into the center of politics. He held this mandate until the Senate elections in January 1897, when he moved to the first chamber. In September 1880, as State Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, Raynal became a member of a government for the first time ( Ferry Cabinet (1.) ). After about two weeks in office, the newly appointed minister resigned and Raynal advanced. He kept this office in the Gambetta government, but had to resign with it in January 1882. When Ferry returned to the head of government in February 1883, Raynal also returned to the ministry. The results of his actions as a minister, in particular the design of the contracts with the six major railway companies in the country, were so controversial that these were sometimes referred to in the press as " rogue contracts ". As a member of parliament, the committed free trader devoted himself to budgetary and economic issues in the Chamber and later in the Senate: the development of the merchant navy attracted his attention, as did the development of a new customs tariff. For some time from 1887 he was parliamentary group leader of the Union of the Left . He owed his last ministerial post in the Perier cabinet to this strong internal party weight .
