Henri Auguste Varroy (born March 25, 1826 - March 23, 1883 in Vittel ) was a French engineer and politician. From December 1879 to September 1880 and from January to August 1882 he was Minister of Public Works in the first two Freycinet Governments .

Life and work

Henri Auguste Varroy was born into the family of a justice of the peace and studied at the École polytechnique from 1843 before moving to the École des Ponts ParisTech as the best of his year in 1846 , which he graduated in 1849, also the best of his year. In the following years until 1860, Varroy worked on straightening the Rhine in the Baden - Alsace section. He then held a leading position in the construction of several railway lines in Lorraine , and in 1869 Varroy became head of the regional road and bridge administration in Nancy .

Political career

With the best result of all candidates in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , Varroy was elected to the French National Assembly in February 1871 , where he took his place on the left. Together with a number of other MPs, he resigned his mandate on March 1, 1871 in protest against the preliminary peace of Versailles , but used a corresponding resolution of the remaining MPs to resume the mandate on March 20. In October 1871 he was also elected President of the General Council of his home region.

In January 1876, Varroy was elected Senator for his homeland and was re-elected at the first partial renewal in January 1879. In the Senate he primarily dealt with budget and economic issues, including a. as rapporteur on several laws. His two terms as minister were mainly characterized by the implementation of the Freycinet plan , which included the generous expansion of rail links and canals throughout France.

In 1864 Varroy became a Knight of the Legion of Honor . In Épinal there is a rue Varroy in his memory .
