David Sackett

David Lawrence Sackett (born November 17, 1934 in Chicago , Illinois , United States , † May 13, 2015 in Markdale , Ontario , Canada ) was a Canadian physician and one of the pioneers of evidence-based medicine .

Sackett founded the first university department for clinical epidemiology and biostatistics (Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics) at McMaster University in Hamilton (Ontario) in Canada in 1967 . In this context, the concepts of clinical epidemiology and scientifically based patient care were developed, which have been in worldwide use since the beginning of the 1990s under the name of "evidence-based medicine".

From 1994 to 1999 David Sackett was the founding director of the Center for Evidence-Based Medicine of the National Health Service at Oxford University , England. During this time, Sackett pioneered evidence-based health care in Europe. In 1999, Sackett founded the Kilgore S. Trout Research & Education Center at Irish Lake in Ontario .

In 2000, Sackett was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame . In 2007, the Science Prize of the German Evidence-Based Medicine Network was named after David Sackett (see David Sackett Prize ). In 2009 he received the Canada Gairdner Wightman Award .
