David Shields

David Shields (born July 22, 1956 in Los Angeles , California , USA) is an American author who writes non-fiction as well as fiction and books that defy classification.

Life

In 1978, Shields left Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island with a summa cum laude degree in English literature. In 1980 he graduated from the University of Iowa with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in fiction. In 1984, Shields published his first novel Heroes . From 1985 to 1988 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Lawrence University in Canton , New York .

Shields is a Milliman Distinguished Writer in Residence at the University of Washington in Seattle , Washington . Shields is a participant in the MFA Writer's Program at Warren Wilson College , Swannaonnoa, near Asheville , North Carolina .

Shields' works have been translated into 15 languages ​​so far (2011). His essays and stories have been published in various magazines such as New York Times Magazine , Harper's , Yale Review , Village Voice, etc. His book reviews have appeared in various daily newspapers.

Shields lives in Seattle with his wife and daughter.
