David Toupé (born March 19, 1977 in Rennes , Ille-et-Vilaine ) is a French badminton player . He had been a member of the French national badminton team since 1993, initially as a junior. Toupé has been paraplegic since 2003 as a result of a skiing accident and starts in Parabadminton in the starting class WH1 in singles, doubles and mixed. Toupé is aiming to take part in the 2020 Summer Paralympics .

Athletic career

David Toupé grew up in Saint-Méen-le-Grand near Rennes in the Breton department of Ille-et-Vilaine . He started playing badminton at the age of ten and at the age of 15 he was accepted into the Paris sports college INSEP . Since 1993 he was a member of the French national badminton team, initially in the junior class. In 2003 he suffered serious injuries in a skiing accident and has been paraplegic ever since . He then turned to parabadminton .

At the Badminton World Cup for the disabled in Seoul in 2009 , Toupé won bronze in singles and silver in doubles with his partner Alexander Polstjankin . In 2010 he won the mixed title with Sonja Häsler at the European Badminton Championships for the disabled in Filzbach, Switzerland . At the 2011 World Cup in Guatemala City, Toupé lost to the eventual world champion Sam-Seop Lee from South Korea in the individual semi-finals . He also won bronze in doubles with Alexander Polstjankin. In the mixed with Sonja Häsler he reached the final, but they had to admit defeat to the South Korean duo Sam-Seop Lee and Ok-Cha Son . In 2012 at the European Championships in Dortmund, Toupé was defeated by the German Thomas Wandschneider in the individual final . Also in doubles there was only silver for him and his partner Pascal Barrillon against the duo from Avni Kertmen and Wandschneider, who started for Turkey , and in mixed Toupé and Häsler lost to the duo Wandschneider and Karin Suter-Erath . In 2013, Toupé and Wandschneider won double gold at the World Cup at the same location. At the 2014 European Championships in Murcia , Toupé won silver in singles against Wandschneider and gold in doubles with Wandschneider against Avni Kertmen and the Englishman Martin Rooke . In mixed there was silver for Toupé and Häsler, against the final winners Rooke and Suter-Erath.

In 2016 Toupé won silver in the singles at the European Championships in Beek, the Netherlands, and lost again to Thomas Wandschneider in the final. Even in doubles, it was only enough to win silver with Martin Rooke against Wandschneider and the Englishman Connor Dua-Harper . In the mixed final he lost to Narin Uluc Rooke and Suter-Erath from Turkey. At the home European championship 2018 in Rodez , the individual competition ended in the final with a defeat against Wandschneider. In doubles with the Israeli Amir Levi it was also only enough to win silver against Rooke and Wandschneider. At the BWF World Championships for the disabled in 2019 in Basel Toupé participated, but was eliminated in the singles and doubles in the second round.

Toupé is responsible for parabadminton in the French badminton association. He works as a physiotherapist for the French national badminton team.
