David Widhopff
David Widhopff ( Ukrainian Давид Осипович Видгоф ; born May 5, 1867 in Odessa , Russian Empire , † July 20, 1933 in Saint-Clair-sur-Epte , France ) was a French painter, poster artist and caricaturist of Ukrainian descent.
After completing his studies at the Art Academy in Odessa, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In September 1887 he came to Paris and began studying at the Académie Julian . He participated in the Paris salons in 1888, 1891 and 1893.
He visited Brazil and founded an art school in Pará state. After returning to Paris, he settled in Montmartre , where he met the painter Alfons Mucha and the writer and editor of the magazine “La Plume” Léon Deschamps. Since then he has been busy with the illustrations for the Paris art magazines. He also created oil paintings - landscapes and still lifes, as well as cardboard boxes for tapestry workshops.
In 1912 a joint exhibition of the works of David Widhopff and his friends Alexander Altman and Naum Aronson took place in Paris .
David Widhopff was awarded the Legion of Honor.
