Alexander Altman
Alexander Altman (Russian Александр Альтман , born February 28, 1878 in Sobolivka , Russian Empire , † September 14, 1932 in Nemours , France ) was a Ukrainian-French landscape painter.
Born into a poor Jewish family, he attended the religious cheder school . At the age of eleven he left home and came to Odessa , where he earned his living as an assistant to a tailor, locksmith and shoemaker. He was employed as a servant by the painter Doroshenko, who discovered his talent and encouraged him to attend an art school.
In 1898 Altman came to Vienna , then to Paris , where he had attended the Académie Julian since 1900 .
In 1908 he showed his first works at the Paris salons, such as Artistes Indépendants (1910–1920), Salon des Tuileries (1908) and Salon d'Automne (1908–1924) and in Odessa in the salon of Vladimir Izdebski. In 1912 Altman exhibited his works in Paris together with his friends David Widhopff and Naum Aronson .
Altman mainly created landscapes of France as well as cityscapes, rare still lifes. All his life he remained loyal to Impressionism.
