David Young (musician)

David Young (* 1933 in Indianapolis , † 6. February 2009 ) was an American jazz - tenor saxophonist .

David Young studied music at Kentucky State College, then Butler University and Indiana University ; during this time he played in the Third Armored Division Band . Together with Ray Appleton he played in the quartet of David Baker , which had an engagement at Club Topper on 34th Street in Indianapolis. Together with Baker, Young moved to New York in the late 1950s, where he became a member of the George Russell Sextet. With this formation, Young worked on albums such as Space Age , The George Russell Sextet at the Five Spot , Stratusphunk and The George Russell Sextet in Kansas City . He also played with Lionel Hampton , Frank Foster , Jack McDuff and the Grover Mitchell Jazz Orchestra and accompanied the vocalists Sarah Vaughan , Ella Fitzgerald , Joe Williams , Nancy Wilson , Tony Bennett , Della Reese and in the Duke Ellington Orchestra under the direction of Mercer Ellington Cab Calloway . In his final years he worked at the local level in his hometown. In the 1980s and 1990s he was a member of the Small Talk formation there , in which trumpeter Clifford Ratliff and pianist Gary Walters also played.
