David van Royen

David van Royen (born December 30, 1727 in Leiden , † April 29, 1799 ibid) was a Dutch botanist and doctor . Its botanical author abbreviation is " D.Royen ".

Live and act

David van Royen was the son of his father of the same name, David van Royen (1699–1764) and Catharina van den Bergh. At the age of thirteen he was enrolled at the University of Leiden on March 11, 1740 , where he had studied medical sciences. On August 24, 1752 he received his doctorate in medicine with the treatise de Intestinis crassis, multorum malorum causa et sede . On April 22, 1754 he was appointed professor of botany by the curators of the Leiden University and took over the office on June 14, 1754 with the introductory speech De hortis publicis praestantissimis scientiae Botanicae adminiculis .

He also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1762/1763 , which position he resigned with the speech De hodierna rei Herbariae excolendae ratione, ad certitudinem et evidentiam in ea consequendam egregie comparata . On June 1, 1786, he resigned from his teaching post. His successor was Sebald Justinus Brugmans . David van Royen was a member of the Royal Society from December 6, 1759 .

His marriage on August 21, 1759 in Delft to Barbara van der Burch (* December 17, 1724, † April 12, 1768 in Leiden), the daughter of the secretary of the orphanage in Delft Jan van der Burch and his wife Maria van Royen, remained childless.
