The Davidwache , also incorrectly referred to as the Davidswache (with Fugen-s ), is the building of the Hamburg Police Department 15 and has become the most famous police station in the Hanseatic city and beyond, especially through film and television .

The guard is located in the Kiez in the St. Pauli district on the Reeperbahn , at the corner of Spielbudenplatz and Davidstraße . The area covers 0.92 km² and has about 14,000 inhabitants.

The building was planned by Fritz Schumacher and completed in 1914, the sculptor Richard Kuöhl designed the jewelry ceramics. The listed old building was expanded in 2004/2005 to include a modern extension in which the rooms of the criminal police are housed.

history

The story of the Davidwache began unspectacularly. In 1840 the Hamburg Senate approved a police station for the St. Pauli area outside the city gates. In April 1840 a guard was hired, and in October 1840 they moved into a little house on the corner of Kastanienallee and Davidstraße. As early as 1867, it seemed necessary to strengthen the police force, which also resulted in increased space requirements. It happened that on the corner of Davidstrasse and Spielbudenplatz a building of the Hamburg citizen military was available after its closure. The guard moved to this location in 1868, which it still occupies today.

After 31 years in which the police guard service was subordinate to a civil deputation, the guard was assigned to the Hamburg police authority in 1871 - at that time as Police Station 13 .

With the further expansion of the St. Pauli entertainment district, a further increase in the police presence seemed urgently required at the turn of the century. Service rooms for the criminal, moral and immigration police had to be accommodated, and a larger building was needed.

It was decided to build a new building and commissioned the city architect Fritz Schumacher to plan a building. A lengthy dispute ensued about the suitable location: the residents and the operators of the amusement facilities demanded that the guard be relocated to the old location in Kastanienallee, as the constant presence of the police directly on Spielbudenplatz was perceived as detrimental to business. However, since the construction site there was too small, the police authority was finally able to prevail with their wish to keep the site.

Another dispute, this time over funding, ensued. Fritz Schumacher's original cost estimate from 1911 was around 115,000 marks (ℳ), in 1913 the costs were already estimated at ℳ 170,000. But this dispute was finally settled and the necessary money made available.

After construction in 1913–1914, the current building was handed over to the police on December 10, 1914.

On October 9, 1970, the so-called Davidwache, which has been popularly known for well over 100 years, was given the right by the then Interior Senator Heinz Ruhnau to use this name officially and in external legal transactions.

After several extensive renovations, the last major ones in 1968 and 1990/1991, more space was required again in 2003 as part of a restructuring of the Hamburg police force. The locally responsible criminal police station, previously housed unfavorably on Lerchenstrasse in the rooms of the neighboring guard, was to be merged with the forces of the protection police to form a police station in the same building.

After a construction period of around 15 months, the extension was officially handed over on April 4, 2005 and the creation of Police Commissioner 15 was announced. The criminal police and the department for road traffic affairs are now housed in the extension, while the old part of the building houses the security police and the commissariat management. The extension also offers space for a large conference hall.

Movies

In 1964 Jürgen Roland's film Polizeirevier Davidswache came to the cinemas, in 1971 Wolfgang Staudte's escape route from St. Pauli followed - a major alarm for the Davidswache .

The guard serves as one of several models for the early evening series Großstadtrevier broadcast in the first program of ARD . However, the film is shot in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. The Davidwache also serves as a model for the ZDF series Notruf Hafenkante .
