There are two famous mosques in the Hui Chinese Quarter : Daxue Xixiang Mosque and Huajuexiang Mosque ( 化 觉 巷 清真寺 , Huajuexiang qingzhensi ). Because the latter is to the east of the first, it is called Dongdasi 东大寺 ("Eastern Great Temple"), while the Daxue Xigang Mosque to the west of it is called Xidasi 西 大寺 ("Western Great Temple").

The oldest evidence of the Chinese Arabic script Xiao'erjing is provided by a stele with verses from the Koran and the names of those who described them. The stele is dated to the year 740 of the Islamic calendar (between July 9, 1339 and June 26, 1340 ).

The Daxue Xixiang Mosque has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 2013 .
