history

The hotel in the 1930s

The building was constructed in 1929 in the Beaux Arts style in downtown Ohio just a hundred yards from the banks of the Miami River at the junction of E First Street and W Main Street . In one of the city's tallest buildings after completion, the Biltmore Hotel opened that same year and quickly became one of the most prominent hotels in the country.

The name was in reference to the Biltmore House , a mansion on the Biltmore Estates , a country estate near Asheville ( North Carolina ) is selected, the commissioned by George Washington Vanderbilt II was built from 1888 to 1895. At that time he named his property after his surname, which means van der Bildt ( German  “from Bildt” ), referring to the municipality of Het Bildt in the Netherlands , from which his family came, and More , the old English word for “wide country ".

The Biltmore Hotel has hosted prominent figures from politics and the arts, such as John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley , and has also served as a venue for conferences and exhibitions, for example in March 1952 for the first Hamvention , an exhibition and fair for amateur radio .

After being part of the Bowman-Biltmore Hotels chain in the early years , it was operated by Hilton from 1946 until the late 1950s . From the 1960s to 1974 it became part of Sheraton Hotels and was called the Sheraton-Dayton Hotel during that time . Then it was renamed again and was called the Biltmore Towers Hotel until 1981 .

In 1981 it was taken over by the Kuhlmann Design Group and redesigned into today's senior citizens' residence. The Biltmore Towers , as they are called today, have 230 apartments with sizes between 46 and 66 square meters as well as leisure facilities such as a restaurant, small shops, snack bars and a doctor's office. The current owner is the Apartment Investment and Management Company (AIMCO) .
