Hilton Worldwide Holdings (formerly Hilton Hotels Corporation ) is a US company based in Tysons Corner , near Washington, DC , and one of the largest hotel chains in the world.

history

The hotel chain was founded in 1919 by Conrad Nicholson Hilton in Cisco (Texas) and has since developed into a leading hotel brand. In the first half of the century, growth was still limited to the USA.

The worldwide expansion began with the opening of the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico in 1949. The first pillar in Europe was opened in 1955 ( Istanbul ), three years later the first German representative followed in Berlin . Hilton was the first to offer guests amenities like televisions and direct dial telephones.

In 1949, Hilton Hotels Corporation and Hilton International were formed to distinguish between hotels in the United States and those outside of it. The international trademark rights were sold to the British company "The Hilton Group plc ." In the late 1960s . After Hilton International changed hands several times, the British company Ladbroke Group PLC took over the company in 1987 .

In 1997, both Hilton groups agreed to work together on marketing to ensure a uniform appearance for customers. In addition, there was a collaboration in sales and marketing, including the use of a common logo. In February 2006, Hilton International went to the parent company for $ 5.3 billion and merged with it.

The 131 hotels of its own Scandic brand were sold to the Scandinavian investment company EQT in spring 2007 for around 833 million euros . In July 2007, the investor Blackstone Group acquired the Hilton chain for US $ 26 billion (19 billion euros).

In September 2013 it was announced that the Blackstone Group would like to bring the Hilton hotels back onto the stock exchange. The stock started trading on December 11, 2013 at US $ 20 under the abbreviation HLT and ISIN US43300A1043. At the end of 2016, Blackstone still owned 40.3% Hilton Worldwide, whereby a purchase agreement with the Chinese company HNA Group was agreed for 25% .

On January 3, 2017, the merger of the spin-offs from Park Hotels & Resorts Inc. and Hilton Grand Vacations Inc. was completed. After the spin-offs, the number of shares was reduced from 30 billion to 10 billion.
