history

In World War II, large parts of Berlin were - especially in the downtown area - destroyed. Many hotels were unusable due to bomb hits or - like the Hotel Adlon - were located in what was then East Berlin . The hotel was founded at the request of Conrad Hilton . At the time, the construction cost 27 million marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency around 64 million euros ) and was planned by the architects Pereira  & Luckman, Paul Schwebes and Hans Schoszberger , with Conrad Hilton giving rough guidelines on how to open the first house in Germany Hilton Hotels Group presented. The gardens were designed by Herta Hammerbacher . When it opened on November 28, 1958, the Hilton Berlin was considered the most modern hotel in Europe. With its characteristic facade design in the form of a chessboard pattern , the hotel is a landmark on the Landwehr Canal that can be seen from afar . The house is a listed building .

Heads of state and members of government such as Bill Clinton , Jacques Chirac , George W. Bush and Henry Kissinger stayed at the hotel . Due to its outstanding position, the hotel has hosted many celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich , Alfred Hitchcock , Maria Callas , Sophia Loren , Louis Armstrong and Michael Jackson .

In 1978 the hotel business near the Großer Tiergarten was sold to the InterContinental Hotels Group and renamed InterContinental Berlin . In 1992 the Hilton Hotels Group took over the hotel operations of the former Interhotel Domhotel on Gendarmenmarkt , which has since been known as the Hilton Berlin . From April 1, 2011, it was run by the Neue Dorint and was named Dorint Hotel Convention Center until the end of May 2011 . Since June 2011 the hotel has been called InterContinental Berlin again.
