Dead Zone: The Grateful Dead CD Collection (1977–1987) is the first box set by the band Grateful Dead .

history

Grateful Dead received their first label deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1967, which was valid until 1973. The band recorded the next albums with their own label Grateful Dead Records before switching to the Arista Records label in 1977 .

By 1987 they released six live and studio albums under Arista: Terrapin Station , Shakedown Street , Go to Heaven , Reckoning , Dead Set and In the Dark .

The first studio albums and especially Go to Heaven received strong criticism, before bigger successes were celebrated again with Reckoning and Dead Set . During the six-year break between Dead Set and In the Dark , the Grateful Dead celebrated great success with live performances and felt stadiums and concert halls. With In the Dark , the band released their most commercially successful album, with which they achieved multiple platinum and successes in the Billboard charts . Then Arista decided to release a box set of the previous six albums in order to continue to use the success of the Grateful Dead.

In contrast to the later box sets from Rhino Records , this one did not receive any bonus material.

For the album cover was Alton Kelley , who also for the Europe '72 was in charge. The front shows the well-known dead cover made of skulls, crossed bones and roses on the back pocket of a pair of jeans, the back shows the covers of the six albums and their track lists.

Despite the success and fame of Grateful Dead, Dead Zone: The Grateful Dead CD Collection (1977-1987) did not achieve high sales. It wasn't until nine years later that Arista released the next box set called The Arista Years .
