In the Dark is the twelfth studio album by the band Grateful Dead .
history
The album In the Dark was recorded from January 6th to 13th, 1987 and released on July 6th, 1987 by the Arista Records label.
Six years had passed since the last album Dead Set in which the band celebrated great success with live performances. Seven years had passed since the last studio album Go to Heaven . In addition to the appearances, the band, especially Jerry Garcia , attracted attention through excessive drug abuse. In 1985 he was arrested in Golden Gate Park for drug possession and, among other things, he had to give a benefit concert as punishment. In 1986 he briefly fell into a coma and then tried to live without drugs.
Some of the songs were recorded in the Marin County Veterans Auditorium under simulated live conditions. Garcia called Marin County Veterans Auditorium a nice place to record; the atmosphere would inspire you to work. When they usually played outside, they didn't really play; they rather hang around, but playing in the marin without an audience, just for yourself for fun, was in the form of an experiment.
In the Dark is considered to be the band's only studio album in which they were able to capture and convey the feeling of their live shows. Both the album and released singles reached places in the top 10 of the respective charts. The song Touch of Gray became the most successful song in the band's history and even took first place in the mainstream rock charts. In addition, the song was the first Dead song for which there was a music clip , which was also played regularly on MTV .
This time Herbie Green was responsible for the album cover . It shows the pairs of eyes of the six musicians plus a seventh pair of eyes that belong to the music promoter Bill Graham .
In 2004 a revised version of the seven songs and six others were released by Rhino Records for the box set Beyond Description (1973-1989) , which were then released in 2006 as a single CD.
