Diaz Victor "Dean" Cetrulo (born February 24, 1919 in Newark , † May 9, 2010 in Bay Head ) was an American fencer .

Life

Dean Cetrulo took part in the 1948 Olympic Games in London , where he finished third with the saber team. With Miguel de Capriles , James Flynn , Norman Cohn-Armitage , Tibor Nyilas and George Worth , he received the bronze medal. With the foil team he just missed another medal win in fourth place. In the individual competitions, he was eliminated with the foil and the saber in the preliminary round. In 1941 and 1947 he was the US individual champion with the foil and in 1948 with the saber, he also won the national title in team competition five times.

Cetrulo attended Seton Hall University . During World War II he was First Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces and was shot down during a mission over Italy , which resulted in his capture by the Wehrmacht . He managed to escape and hid with an Italian family in a village near Naples . After the liberation of the village by the Allied forces , he returned to his unit.
