Tibor Andrew Nyilas (born June 3, 1914 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † May 19, 1986 in Queens , New York City ) was an American saber fencer .

Life

Tibor Nyilas, who emigrated to the United States in 1939 due to the political situation in Hungary, took part in four Olympic Games : at the Olympic Games in London in 1948 he took third place with the team and received with Miguel de Capriles , James Flynn , Norman Cohn-Armitage , Dean Cetrulo and George Worth the bronze medal. In the individual he was seventh. In 1952 in Helsinki and in 1960 in Rome , he just missed another medal win with the team in fourth. In between he was at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 with the US team fifth, while he was eliminated in his second individual participation in the preliminary round. He won twelve national titles with the team and seven in saber singles. Nyilas achieved several successes in the Pan American Games . In 1951 in Buenos Aires , 1955 in Mexico City and 1959 in Chicago he won a total of five gold medals. In all participations he won the tournament with the saber team, and in 1951 he also secured gold in singles and with the foil team.

Nyilas had obtained a medical degree in Hungary in 1937 and worked as a general practitioner first in St. Louis and later in New York City .
