Death Toll 80k is a Finnish death metal , crustcore and grindcore band from Lappeenranta that was formed in 2005.

history

The band was founded in March 2005 by the singer Oula Kerkelä and the guitarist Tomi Kareinen. A short time later, bassist Riku Taipale was added, but he was replaced by Iiro Kerkelä in the summer. In 2006 the group held their first appearances in Lappeenranta. A first demo was also released in May. In 2007 the drummer Jarkko "Jake" Siippainen was replaced by Jori Sara-aho. In 2008 more appearances followed, as well as another demo and a split release in June. After a first European tour , which took place in Sweden , Germany and the Czech Republic , the bassist Kerkelä left the line-up. In 2011 the debut album Harsh Realities was released . The LP version was released by Rødel Records , the CD version was released by FDA Rekotz . Ville Valavuo can then be heard as bassist. In 2014 the group played at the Maryland Deathfest .

style

In the biography on marylanddeathfest.com , the band's music is described as a mix of grindcore, death metal, thrash metal and crustcore. In their texts, the group deals with topics such as war, the environment and social problems. According to Mindaugas Lapinskas from voicesfromthedarkside.de , the band on Harsh Realities plays a mixture of grindcore and crustcore with riffs that would occasionally remind you of Slayer . In addition, influences from bands like Bolt Thrower , Terrorizer , Insect Warfare and Rot can be heard. They also mix influences from Swedish Death Metal. The album is about 25 minutes long and consists of 23 songs that deal with topics such as suffering, injustice, death and murder. Unlike other Grincore bands, Death Toll 80k is more varied. Adrian Wagner from Powermetal.de felt reminded of oldschool grindcore of the late 1980s when he heard the album , as it was played by Napalm Death , Bolt Thrower, Extreme Noise Terror and Heresy . The album contains the "unfiltered elemental force of death metal, crust and grindcore". The speed of the songs is always high. The songs are usually very short, as only three songs exceed the two-minute mark. Usually the songs are 30 to 60 seconds long. The vocals are "[i] nfernal screams and bitter growls that can do without pitch shifters ". Similar to Napalm Death, the band exercises social criticism with their lyrics.
