The work was commissioned in 1889 to decorate the grave of the brothers Joseph (1841-1886), James and Martin Milmore (1844-1883) in the Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain near Boston. The Milmore brothers immigrated from Ireland in 1851 . Joseph became a stonemason and Martin a sculptor. They often worked together on assignments. One of her best known works is that of a sphinx of granite . It dates from 1872 and is located in the Mount Auburn Cemetery, also not far from Boston.

After the plaster cast of the Milmore monument was cast in bronze by the Gruet foundry in Paris , it was exhibited in the French capital, including in the Salon du Champ-de-Mars . It received a medal of honor. French and the Milmore family agreed to have four more casts made, which went to museums in Chicago , Philadelphia , Boston, and St. Louis .

A replica of the work was created between 1921 and 1926 . This is a marble sculpture  (picture) that is kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York.
