He immigrated from Ireland to Boston in the United States as a boy of seven . There he attended the Boston Latin School until 1860 , then took art classes at the Lowell Institute and learned from his brother Joseph (1841–1886), who was three years older than him, to carve wood and cut stone . He learned sculpture from the sculptor Thomas Ball (1819–1911) until the mid-1860s. During this time the American Civil War raged from 1861 to 1865 , which had a strong impact on him.

One of his first works was the bust for Charles Sumner (1811–1874), American politician and Senator for Massachusetts , which is now on display in the United States Senate . Shortly afterwards he created the statue of a soldier  (picture) , which was erected in 1867 in the Forest Hills Cemetery in his home in Roxbury, now a district of Boston.

One of his best-known works is the Sphinx  (picture), created in 1872 in the Mount Auburn cemetery in Cambridge . It bears the inscription:

"American Union Preserved
African Slavery Destroyed
By the Uprising of a Great People
By the Blood of Fallen Heroes"

From 1874 he created the Soldiers and Sailors Monument , which was erected in 1877 as a victory column on Flag Staff Hill in Boston Common .

Still very young, he was torn from life due to cirrhosis of the liver and was himself buried in the Forest Hills cemetery. In 1889, his family commissioned a special grave monument for him and his brother Joseph (1841–1886), who died three years after him and was buried next to him . The work was carried out by Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) and completed in 1893. It is the bronze - sculpture Death and the Sculptor ( German  "Death and the Sculptor"(picture) , which allegorically shows how a young sculptor at work from the Angel of Death is visited.
